Question

...What AG item would mean more to you if you received it from someone else? Is there any item that you really want but are hoping that someone else will get it for you? So you are waiting and waiting and hoping...

There are AG items that I buy for myself throughout the year. I especially watch for sale items. And there are outfits or accessories that I need to complete some picture or story or odd collection. (Such as my collection of ALL items related to cooking/baking, no matter what doll they go with.)

However, there are some items that I just can't justify buying for myself. Marisol was one of them. She just seemed like such a luxury. I'm SO glad my dh got her for me. She's the only item my dh ever bought for me from AG and I doubt there will ever be another item from him. It was a total surprise to me. So that doll is probably the most meaningful item in my collection because my dh put his [img]graemlins/heart.gif[/img] into it.

I really want the gala outfit. I'll probably get it long after Christmas if it's still around. But it would mean SO much more if my dd got it for me because it's such a girlie item and would be a lovely keepsake of all our shopping fun together. So I'll probably buy other items before I guy the gala outfit, even though I like it most.

Know what I mean?

Well, the doll hair kit today that my dad got me by surprise is definetly special to me

I'm also hoping he will get me Casey (AGT25) for Christmas. It would mean ALOT more to me if he got it for me because it's from him. Not bought with my own money, but from my own dad. I think my mom might get me a life of faith doll, too. That would really mean a lot to me.

I treasure all of my AG gifts, but the dolls are the most special. My very first AG doll was one that was supposed to be me when I was a child. My young daughter thought I should have a doll too. When she told her dad about her idea, he thought the doll might help me reparent the little girl I once was. That was many years ago, but she is still my most precious doll. My daughter is now a teen and last Christmas she bought me an AG outfit with her own money. I really liked what she gave me, but it meant even more because she picked it out.

I treasure all the AG gifts that people have given me...but it would mean a lot me if my parents got me AGOT 25. They got me my first doll i think it was 4 years ago. And it would be great if they got me AGOT 25, but if they dont, i will just save up and get her myself

I've never techinically got them as "gifts" The most gift like it came was my hubby gave me money to get Felicity on our anniversary. He has gone into AGPNY with me though.

Usually one of them is a debate as well. *grins*

My parents for our first anniversary got us a room for a night at the St. Regis in NY. We were literally two blocks away from AGPNY. Well while Rich was lying in bed watching tv for about 6 hours straight-because he was in love with the room, he gave me money to get Felicity.

Hopefully though, with the three post-its on the computer, I'm getting something from American Girl Place this holiday season.

I've always done what I guess is kind of a compromise between getting something as a gift and getting it yourself, beginning back when I was 12 and saving for Molly. I kept all of my allowance as well as holiday gifts from the four members of my extended family who sent them, for several months to a year. It took all that much to get Molly! My extended family were not all well-off, and my grandma, for example, could send only a few dollars as a Christmas gift. With all of that money saved, I would buy a doll and not see it until Christmas (my mom would wrap it).

Now I have several AG dolls, but a couple of my relatives have passed on. Getting the dolls from them--even though not directly--meant a whole lot to me, because they are a tangible reminder of my loved ones. I even wrote to my aunt a year or two back, telling her about my tradition and how the dolls are a reminder of my grandma/her mom. While my grandma could only send a few dollars, by combining her gift with the gifts of others, it allowed her to get me something wonderful that I plan to keep for a lifetime. I could tell it really made her day to know that what her mom sent was not spent on something throwaway, but used with thought. Because a few dollars from my grandma was a big gift and sacrifice, even if most people would not have looked at it in that way.

All my AG dolls were purchased in this manner. Almost all my additional AG items are from my parents. The clothing is from my mom (most of it sewed). It does really make it all the more special to receive something as a gift.

I can't really answer the question since everything I have is basically a gift, but did want to chime in that it *does* make things extra special, and a reminder of who gave them to you.

Question

I think getting any AG item from someone you care about means a lot.

I've told this story before, but my most prized possession is my white-bodied Molly which my DH bought for me at Goodwill for 59 cents. Sure, her fingers are chewed some (or missing) but she is absolutely gorgeous, and means the world to me.

I had told hubby earlier that year that I wanted an AG doll for Christmas. He chuckled--but knowing that I did collect dolls, he knew I was serious. We had a really rough time financially for about the six months prior, and I knew there was no way that I would be getting an AG doll that Christmas. It was all we could manage to get two fixer-upper AGs from ebay for our daughters for Christmas, and that was with using money from Grandma and Grandpa to help pay for them.

Well, about a week before Christmas, we decided to take the girls to the local Goodwill store. They loved looking for stuff, and I was kinda hoping that someone might have turned in some toys we could get the girls, since Christmas was going to be pretty minimal that year. I take off following them once inside the store, and next thing I know, he's showing me this doll (my Molly) he spotted (not at all by the other toys) and saying, "Merry Christmas, honey!" We had to hide the doll from the girls until Christmas (since they would have wanted her), but I got my AG doll I wished for that Christmas! And little did I know, that about two weeks later, my DH would pass away. So, yes, I think items do mean a lot more based on who gave them to us!

I have 2 outfits from my DH for last Christmas. They were wrapped and under the tree. I had only been collecting for a couple of months back then, mostly from ebay, and had no idea what a new AG box was like. He had me save them for last to open, and I was SO exited to find Felicity's school outfit and Josefina's birthday outfit in those two mysterious little boxes! By far my favorite presents last year!
These were my most-wanted outfits, so I really love them--but they do mean even more to me because DH made the effort to listen, and find out what I really wanted most.
(This year, he'll probably disguise them, if he gets me any more!)

Elizabeth. (or rather, Purity, as she is now called) I bought her for myself, and I'm having bonding issues. It's the same with Marisol. Any dolls I've bought for myself are harder to bond with. Luckily, I've finally bonded with Molly after a few years, but Purity just seems to have a blank stare. Hopefully we'll bond eventually.

Kirsten is from my parents. On our eight birthday, we girls know we are getting an american girl doll, and we go through the proces of picking our favorite. After that, Mum will make outfits, and grampa used to make us furniture (until he passed away in January). Getting actual sets from AG is rare. I used to get more when I was little, but money has been tight. They would never buy any of us a second doll. The outfits my mom made and the furniture from Daddy and Grampa are far more special to me than anything bought from AG. Well, maybe my dolls . . .

Kaya was a surprise from my older sister. She didn't even mean for me to get it really. She entered my name in a drawing at a hallmark store that was near her college. We don't have one here, and so I didn't even know there was a drawing going on. I got a phonecall from hallmark one day telling me I had won Kaya and Tatlo! I was very surprised and had a hard time figuring out how that happened. Eventually my sister told me. She picked up the doll and brought it home. Then she informed me that she had been hoping to win it under my name . . .no such luck!! SO we call it my doll from Laura. She doesn't really collect AG anymore anyway.
